The Intersection of Environmental Justice and Healthy Communities

Examining the adverse impacts of climate change on health, it is important to carefully explore existing and potential inequities, as well as what progress and efforts have been, are being, and can be made to address these environmental justice issues. In this webinar, Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali, Vice President of Environmental Justice, Climate, and Community Revitalization for the National Wildlife Federation, will discuss the issues and progress made toward achieving an equitable and sustainable future and his impressive work in environmental justice, specifically in low-wealth and communities of color. For example, in his work he has elevated environmental justice issues and worked across federal agencies to strengthen environmental justice policies, programs, and initiatives. At the EPA, Dr. Ali led the Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice (EJIWG), which focused on implementing holistic strategies to address the issues facing vulnerable communities.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali
Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali is a Thought-Leader, Strategist, Policymaker, and Activist committed to the fight for environmental justice and economic equity, working across federal agencies to elevate environmental justice issues and to strengthen environmental justice policies, programs, and initiatives. He graduated from West Virginia University and has an Honorary Doctorate degree from Green Mountain College and an Honorary Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from Vermont Law School. Dr. Ali is a Board Member for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Union of Concerned Scientist. In addition, he worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 24-years. At the EPA, he served as the Assistant Associate Administrator for Environmental Justice and Senior Advisor for Environmental Justice and Community Revitalization and led the Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice (EJIWG), which was comprised of 17 federal agencies and White House offices focused on implementing holistic strategies to address the issues facing vulnerable communities. Mustafa Santiago Ali worked for EPA Administrators beginning with William Riley and ending with Scott Pruitt. He joined the EPA as a student and became a founding member of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ).
