The US health sector is responsible for 8.5% of US Greenhouse gas emissions and significantly contributes to the climate crisis. Leading healthcare organizations have focused on the impact of the healthcare sector on climate change and also the impact that climate change has on the health of the nation’s population. In this webinar titled “Hospital and Healthcare System Decarbonization: Improving Public Health”, Dr. Shaneeta Johnson and Dr. Neelu Tummala will discuss greenhouse gas emissions of public health systems and the impact these emissions have on public health. In addition, speakers will present equitable solutions that health professionals can take to address these impacts.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Neelu Tummala
Dr. Neelu Tummala is a board-certified physician who joined the Division of Otolaryngology of The GW Medical Faculty Associates in October 2018. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her area of clinical expertise is general otolaryngology (ENT) including sinus and nasal disorders, ear disease, and voice and swallowing concerns. Dr. Tummala is a co-Director for the Climate Health Institute at George Washington University with a special interest in the effects of climate change on population health. She is a prolific writer and lecturer on this issue and has contributed pieces to The Washington Post, Scientific American, CNN, USA Today, The Hill, Newsweek, and The Baltimore Sun. She is on the Board for Virginia Clinicians for Climate Action, is a trained Climate Reality Leader, and is a co-founder of Surgeons for a Sustainable Future.
Speaker Bio: Dr. Shaneeta Johnson
Shaneeta Johnson, MD, is the Deputy Director of the Climate and Health Equity Fellowship (CHEF) program and a 2021 CHEF Fellow. She is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Director of Minimally Invasive, Robotic, and Bariatric Surgery, and Program Director, General Surgery Residency Program at Morehouse School of Medicine and Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She is an experienced surgeon, clinician, educator, philanthropist, and researcher. Shaneeta is passionate about furthering health equity and eliminating disparities. She has been involved and/or spearheaded national and international initiatives to improve health equity. She is a sought-after speaker whose expertise has afforded her invitations to speak both nationally and internationally. She is a recipient of the NMA Emerging Leader Trailblazer Award, American College of Surgeons Claude Organ Traveling Fellowship, Atlanta Business Chronicle 40 under 40 award, 2020 Women who Mean Business Award, and the 2019 Outstanding Atlanta award.
